Snowflake Social, First Friday Dinner, Fisher Gallery Exhibit and Saturday Story Time

Five things you need to know about Avon on Friday, Feb. 4, 2011

Good morning Avon, on this glistening, sunny winter’s day.  It’s been a tough week, but we did get some good news from the groundhog - an early spring is in the forecast.  Let’s bank on that and appreciate the sun today.  Tomorrow? Well, that's another story.

The Master’s School in West Simsbury has extended an invitation to the to its Snowflake Social, today.  There will be refreshments, entertainment from the students, and most importantly, an opportunity for different generations to meet, greet and socialize. The event runs from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Master’s School. 

It seems like we’ve been cooped up all week thanks to Mother Nature.  So why not treat yourself to a dinner out?  The is dishing up its’ First Friday Dinner from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.  Julia Child’s influence will be evident tonight with beef bourguignon as the star attraction.  Dinners are  $12 for adults and $6 for children 10 years of age and younger.  A portion of the dinner's proceeds will be donated to "Reading Is Fundamental”, a children’s literacy organization. The last few dinners have been sold out, so don’t miss out.

After back breaking shoveling this week,  it might be a good time to appreciate the artistic beauty of snow. Glitter Winter / Eye Candy, an exhibit by artist Camomile Hixon, opens today in the Fisher Gallery of the . The opening reception  is free of charge and runs from 7p.m. to 9p.m. The exhibit, which will contain 300 pounds of glitter (yes, that’s right), runs through March 5. 

Saturday, Feb. 5, 2011, is Drop in Saturday Story time at the   With snow and sleet in the forecast, it’s a good time for a change of scenery for little ones ages 3 to 6 years (and parents!) to bundle up, get in the car and head over to the Library. Stories begin at 11 a.m.
