St. Patrick's Day, Meetings and Avon Achievers

Five things you need to know about March 17, 2011.

Hope you had a good weekend, Avon and enjoyed the Hartford St. Patrick's Day parade if you went to it. In honor of St. Patrick's Day on March 17, Patch welcomes you to send photos of Irish spirit and celebration around town to Jessie.Sawyer@patch.com.

Parents, mark March 21 on your calendar as a scheduled presentation about the Board of Education 2011-12 proposed budget, sponsored by the Avon Parent Teacher Organizations. The meeting will take place at 7 p.m. at Avon High School. Board of Education members are scheduled to present.

In the meantime, there will be a Board of Education meeting at Avon High School at 7 p.m. on Tuesday night. The board of education is also holding a special meeting at 6 p.m., but will immediately go into executive session to discuss collective bargaining matters.

At the regular meeting, the board will honor the following students and staff as "Avon Achievers": Avon Middle School student Victoria Gibbs for "being a dedicated student and gifted musician who shares her talents and gives her best effort each and every day;" Avon Middle School staff member Matt Arens for "his continual demonstration of commitment, kindness and leadership;" Avon High School students Nicola Feldman and Daniel Wendler "in recognition of their respective accomplishments as valedictorian and salutatorian of the class of 2011," according to the meeting agenda. State Representative Brian Becker will also be present at the meeting.

A Planning and Zoning Commission meeting is also scheduled Tuesday night, commencing at 7:30 p.m. in the Selectman's Chamber in Town Hall, building one. Lexham Avon, LLC, the property owner of the former Blockbuster building and development applicant Don Hammerberg Associates have requested "site plan approval to modify interior and façade of existing building to house urgent care facility" at 339 West Main St, according to the meeting agenda. The project application was tabled at the last meeting on Feb. 22. The commission is also scheduled to continue discussion on the zoning regulations for Avon Park North, where the town is discussing developing a village center.
