Tax Extension, Water Mains and Weekend Events

Five things to know on April 15, 2011.

It’s April 15 and that should mean your federal tax return is due today. Except it’s not. We’re catching a break this year with an extension until Monday, April 18, because today is a holiday -- Emancipation Day -- in Washington, D.C. The state of Connecticut is extending its tax deadline, too, so your state return isn’t due until Monday, either.

The Avon Water Company continues flushing water mains in West Avon. Today’s scheduled flushees are in the area east of Woodhaven Drive, south of Country Club Road and west of the rail trail. This includes the high school and middle school, the Cotswold Way area and the roads east and west of West Avon Road. The company recommends that residents draw water for drinking before 7:30 a.m. and refrain from doing laundry, as the water may be discolored.

Hungry? The Avon Free Public Library has a mission to feed your mind, but in celebration of National Library Week it will feed your body today, as well. Stop by for punch and cookies during the library’s regular hours, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (While you’re there, you can drop off books for the used book sale in May.) Still hungry? The Men of St. Ann will serve a Lenten pasta dinner tonight at the church hall featuring marinara or clam sauce. The cost is $5 for adults, $3 for children under 18 and $12 for families.

What are the kids doing tomorrow? Trout fishing season begins Saturday in Connecticut, and kids up the age of 15 can take part at the town’s annual fishing derby from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Countryside Park. The cost is $5 per person. Children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult. Only artificial lures and worms or live worms may be used for bait. Coffee, hot chocolate and doughnuts will be sold.

Also on Saturday, there’s a free community shredding event. In Malibu that might mean surfing and in Stowe it might mean snowboarding, but in Avon it will mean that Shred-It, a document destruction company, will shred your paper at no cost  and dispose of it in a secure and environmentally friendly manner. The event takes place from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at The Investors Center, 70 E. Main St.
