Things to Do on Friday the 13th and Beyond

Five things to know on May 13, 2011.

It's Friday the 13th, the only one this year.  It's possible to have as many as three in a single year, so 2011 could be considered relatively lucky. In fact, next year will have three Fridays the 13th: in January, April and July. The notion that Friday the 13th is an unlucky day has been attributed to Christian traditions and ancient Norse myth, among other things, but some scholars say  the superstition arose only in the last few centuries.

Hungry? Avon Lions Charities will hold an all-you-can-eat pasta dinner tonight from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at the . The cost is $10 for adults, $5 for children ages 5 to 12 and free for children 4 and under. High chairs will be available.

Talented?  will hold its Open Mic Coffee House tonight from 7 to 9 p.m.  Musicians, poets, actors, comedians and others are invited to seize their 5 to 10 minutes on stage. A $5 donation will benefit the church's youth programs.

The  Avon Road Race, sponsored by the Pine Grove School PTO, takes place Sunday. The race starts at 8:30 a.m. and registration begins at 7:30 a.m. at the .  There will be a 5-kilometer (3.1-mile) race and a 1-mile family fun run. Registration costs $25 for the 5K and $12 for the fun run.
