Tip a Cop, Michael Russo Receives Bean Scholarship, and More

Five things to know about March 22.

Monday was technically spring, but light snow fell in Avon. Patch took some photos from around the region of the late snowfall. Anyone who has registered an email with Patch has the capability to upload photos to his or her profile and articles. We would love you to share any snow photos you have with us. At least Tuesday is supposed to be sunny!

Avon, Canton and Simsbury police departments are participating in "Tip a Cop" from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at Bertucci's in Avon. Police officers will be paired up with servers, and guests at the restaurant have the option of tipping an additional amount over what they would tip their server to benefit Special Olympics Connecticut.

Michael Russo, of Avon High School, received the prestigious Bean Scholarship from the College of the Holy Cross on March 17, according to Peter O'Sullivan, one of Russo's teachers at the high school. It is a four year full scholarship to study Latin and Greek at Holy Cross.

Avon Patch had another meeting with our Parents Council on Monday at The Coffee Trade and Louanne Flanagan Caspar and Lisa Berman have been chosen as co-captains for the group. They will be arranging coffeehouse-style discussions and/or conference calls with parents interested in discussing the issues and stories relevant to parents and families in the Avon community that may be important to cover in Patch. The parents in the council are also commenting on a weekly "Moms Talk" question posted at 1 p.m. every Wednesday on Patch, and developing ideas for future questions of the week. If you are interested in joining the council, e-mail Jessie.Sawyer@patch.com. We have five moms signed up so far, and would love to see some dads participate, as well.
