What's It Like to Be an Avon Cop?

The Avon Police Department is offering its Citizen's Police Academy again so you can find out.

Avon residents, if you're interested in law enforcement, the Avon Police Department is bringing back its Citizen's Police Academy.

The seven-week academy starts April 17 at the police station on 60 West Main St. next to Town Hall.

Citizen's academy participants will learn about "crime scene investigation, DWI enforcement, the Commercial Truck Safety Inspector Program, and the Detective Division," as well as regional accident, "narcotics enforcement" and "emergency services" teams the department is a part of, according to a press release from the department.

The classes will run until May 29 on Wednesdays from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. The program includes two Saturday classes for a shooting range trip and a mock accident demonstration with the help of the Avon Volunteer Fire Department.

You must be 18 or older to be eligible. In addition to filling out an application, participants will need to pass a criminal background check.

There are limited spots available in the class and the deadline to sign up is April 12. Applications are available in the police department lobby or you can request them via email.

More information is available by contacting Sgt. David Gannon at 1-860-409-4226 or dgannon@town.avon.ct.us.
