When Is Next Hazardous Waste Collection?

Now that Avon has opted out of the Metropolitan District Commission program, residents will bring their hazardous waste to a new collection site.

Avon town officials anticipate that the next hazardous waste collection date will be in August.

Now that Avon is no longer participating in the Metropolitan District Commission's collection program, residents will likely be bringing their hazardous waste to Simsbury's Department of Public Works facility at 66 Town Forest Rd., according to a press release from town officials. Collections will likely be semi-annually in the fall and spring starting in 2014.

Town officials made the decision in February to collaborate with Canton, Simsbury and Granby on putting out a joint request for proposal for a new contractor.

Avon residents previously brought hazardous waste to collection sites in Simsbury and Farmington, neither of which will still be accessible.

Farmington is staying with the MDC program and is not part of the shared services initiative. About 225 households in Avon had access to the Farmington site, though only about 15 used it, town officials said at the February Town Council meeting.

Robertson previously reported to the council that the cost of hazardous waste collection through the MDC program more than doubled since 2004 from $6,752 then to  $15,223 in 2012.

The town plans on notifying residents about the new disposal information as soon as it is available.

More information is available by calling the Avon Department of Public Works at 860-673-6151.
