"Hincks" Mess" and the Civil War Union Cook

Learn about Civil War cooking, campfires, and William Bliss Hincks, of the 14th Connecticut Volunteer Infantry.  Major Hincks was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor as a Sergeant Major for action on July 3, 1863, at the Battle of Gettysburg, Pickett’s Charge.  Presenter Bill Mellow, a resident of Avon, is a cook for Hincks’ Mess, Company F, 14th Connecticut Volunteer Infantry and  a graduate of the Connecticut Culinary Institute.


This program is part of the Avon Library’s Commemoration of 150th Anniversary of the  American Civil War.   It will  take place in the Community Room, where the touring exhibit, “Lincoln: The Constitution and the Civil War” will be hosted from December 15, 2012—February 3, 2013.
