Avon, CT – The Investors Center, Inc. of Avon will feature etchings and collages of Carol A. Taylor, printmaker, a wine tasting by CT Wine of Avon, and a food tasting on Tuesday, December 4, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. The event is free to the public. Taylor, whose home and studio are in New Hartford, has been a full time printmaker for over 30 years. She works with two coordinated techniques. The first and more traditional is the timeless etching, or intaglio print. The process involves drawing a design on a metal plate coated with an acid resistant material called "ground" and immersing the plate in an acid bath. The plate is etched wherever metal has been exposed. The ground is then removed, and ink is rubbed into the etched lines, hand-printed, dried, and hand colored with watercolors. Each of Taylor’s etchings is printed in limited editions.
Taylor’s second and more abstract technique is the collage. Her collage pieces incorporate portions of her etchings, various special papers, metallic threads, cords, sheet music, and even beads. Collages often include parts of two or three etchings, cut into pieces and sewn back together using decorative zig-zag stitching to create one unique work of art that in some instances is more reminiscent of a quilt than of a print or collage. They are all one-of-a-kind pieces.
