Top-ranked Avon High School Soccer Plays in Double-header for Pediatric Cancer on Oct. 24

Update: Please note that the games have been postponed to Wednesday because of the weather.

Soccer fans in this, arguably, ‘soccer-town’, will get their chance to see the top-ranked AHS boys and girls teams play in a featured ‘under the lights’ event on Wednesday evening, October 24, on the AHS football field. The game, originally scheduled for Tuesday night has been postponed due to rain.  The boys will play at 5 p.m., followed by the girls at 7 p.m. The games, part of Avon High School’s Spirit Week, pit the top-ranked AHS Falcons against the rival Suffield High School Wildcats.  Currently, the Avon girls are in second place in the NCCC Conference, behind Suffield, while the Avon boys are tied with Suffield for first place.  An exceptional game and a sell-out crowd are expected.

The event has special meaning for the Avon boys’ team.  Senior co-captain, Robby Brisco, is battling cancer, and money raised at the games will be donated to the CCMC oncology and hematology units where he is being treated.  Robby is a key member of the team.  Even as he undergoes treatments and recovers from multiple surgeries, he attends all practices and games to cheer on his teammates and work on building up his own strength.  He is an inspiration to his team and the school.

Players will wear gold jerseys in honor of Robby and the cause, (gold is the color for Pediatric Cancer), and parents, teachers and classmates will be working the gates, the concession and the stands. Two gold soccer balls (one signed by the boys’ team and one by the girls’) will be given away to lucky fans at the event.

All area soccer fans are invited to support the cause and enjoy two great games of soccer played by the 2011 Connecticut Class L Champions (girls) and runners-up (boys).  Come join the fun on Wednesday, Oct. 24!
