Community Corner

Playing on the Spectrum

Autism Families CONNECTicut (AFC) is pleased to announce its popular gym program “Playing on the Spectrum” for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder, their siblings and families.  “Playing on the Spectrum” Gym and sports program will be offered again in two locations:  Elmwood Community Center in West Hartford will host each Sunday in October (4 sessions) in the gymnasium; and “Playing on the Spectrum” will also be offered at the South Windsor Community Center on Sundays in November (4 sessions). Both programs are open to residents of other towns as well.

This program has been designed especially for children on the spectrum, to provide a fun, safe environment appropriate for their needs.
Play and fun will be facilitated by professional clinicians, and will
include planned activities as well as space for free play.   Children will be encouraged to exercise, to learn motor skills, and to interact with each other. Basic components of various sports will be introduced each week within the groups of ages 6-8 and 9-12. Get your child moving and having fun on the weekend!  Parents must remain with their children during the session.

The Elmwood Community Center program will take place on four Sundays on October (6, 13, 20 and 27).  Children ages 3 to 5 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:20 p.m; ages 6 to 8 from 12:30 to 1:20 p.m; and ages 9 to 13 from 1:30 to 2:20 p.m.  Cost is $40 per participant for all four sessions.  Siblings are invited to join a separate group for arts and crafts activities at a cost of $10 per child for all 4 sessions.  To register, call the ECC main office, 860-561-8160.  This program is co-sponsored by AFC , the West Hartford Human and Leisure Services’ Special Needs Program, and the Doug Flutie Jr. Foundation for Autism.

Volunteers are welcome.
