Wedding Trends for 2014

by Cristin Cook, Banquet Manager, Farmington Woods Clubhouse

The long, cold winter gave me plenty of time to attend several Bridal Shows in the Greater Hartford area, and to see many exciting trends in weddings and receptions for the coming year.  While certainly not all encompassing, here are some indications that comfort and flexibility are the key ingredients for a successful party in 2014:

Rustic is in - The classic church wedding and ballroom reception venue will never go out of style.  Nevertheless, this year, expect to see more rustic themes - weddings at vineyards, in barns, on outside terraces, and in gardens.

The dress - Some say it’s all about the dress, but this year it may be all about the dresses!  Many brides are opting for a formal dress for the wedding ceremony, and a more relaxed dress in which they can dance and move more easily among tables at the reception.

Color schemes and dress styles - Deep purple is a popular color this year; but more importantly, brides are giving their bridesmaids a color chart and allowing them to pick a dress within that spectrum that is best suited to their individual figures and styles.  Patterns and textures are in, as are flowing rather than form fitting dresses.

Service - In this year’s more relaxed receptions, it is will be popular to serve the food ‘family style’ rather than on prepared plates.  The wait staff serves each table as a team, making for very quick service; and passing the serving dishes themselves encourages conversation among the guests.

Photo booths farmingtonwoods.com.– These are not just the two-man cramped compartments you used to see at amusement parks.  Many of the new models can accommodate a group of people and can produce a postcard quality product that is an immediate personalized souvenir.

Seating - Rather than grouping friends and family members at the same tables, brides are ‘mixing it up’ so that the conversation can include making new acquaintances and meeting new in-laws.

Desserts – Wedding cakes are smaller, and cupcakes are everywhere, either as individual desserts, or as a favor in a clear box.  They will be displayed on  Candy tables and Venetian tables.

Table decorations – The layered look is in.  Double tablecloths using two complementing colors from the bride’s theme form the base.  Centerpieces are more natural than formal; for instance, green vines winding around candelabra, set off by only one or two simple flowers.  Some centerpieces hang from the ceiling, or from rafters for dramatic visual appeal.

Monograms are in - on the cakes, on the cupcakes, on the napkins, and even projected from lighting on to the dance floor!

There is one trend that will never change at Farmington Woods: It’s all about the bride - her comfort, her desires, her budget, and her memories.  We have one team that works with the client from beginning to end to ensure that what was promised at the beginning is delivered at the end.  For more information about wedding receptions, birthdays, anniversaries, graduation parties, or any celebration, contact Cristin Cook at 860-673-2419 Ext. 71.
