How a Child's Life has Changed

What is the chief "time robber" preventing your child from getting homework done? Could it be stealing your time, too?

I attended a great seminar on Saturday on  effective strategies for managing kids' homework struggles. One of the key strategies reviewed was to first identify  your child's "time robbers" so that you can start to do something about it.

My mind started drifting to my own "time robbers," mainly the Internet, and it occurred to me why in an age where  things are done quicker and more efficiently through modern technology, no one has enough hours in a day to get everything done. Yes, I am guilty as charged.  As busy as I am, I waste so much time online that I am always running behind on life.

Tonight for example, I sat down at my computer to register my daughter for an event only to find  Facebook on my screen,  and  a wall post from my cousin urging every parent to click on a link about schools around the country that are giving up recess to fit more lesson time in.  Since this was a subject that interested me, I of course had to click on the link, read the entire article, then click on the link to the  parenting site that the article came from, and there I was side tracked for another hour scouting out great articles to share, and apply to my own kids, and work ( sounds funny to mention kids and work separately).

So, here is my favorite article that I found while lost on the net:

"What Our Kids Need is a Little Old School Parenting"

To summarize some  facts from the above article:

  • Today the average kid spends 1,197 minutes per week behind the TV. " .... The Brady Bunch and The Partridge Family, but today it’s Jersey Shore, South Park, Bad Girl’s Club and the Family Guy".
  • That same child will spend only *38.5 minutes of meaningful conversation with their parents in the same week.
  • That child will witness 200,000 violent acts and 16,000 murders on TV before age 18.
  • 75% of all kids ages 12-17 own a cell phone
  • They average 3,600 texts per month
  • 160,000 students stay home every day for fear of being bullied

*38.5 divided by 7 = 5.5 minutes/day of meaningful conversation with parents

Whoops, my daughter just came in to see if I did what I was supposed to do in the first place -- a little role reversal.
