Golf Club of Avon Tennis Players Rally for Cure to Cancer

All of the proceeds from the fundraiser went to Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

Thunderstorms threatened before local tennis players took to the courts, but the Rally for the Cure fundraiser prevailed.

It's the first round-robin tournament fundraiser that the club's tennis program had done, according to head tennis professional Cristina Walters. All of the proceeds will be donated to Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

"Everybody, one or another, has a friend or knows someboy who has or had breast cancer," said Walters, who has worked as tennis pro for 18 years.

So 28 tennis players from Avon and the region came to support the cause. Registration cost $20 per person and participants could donate more. There was also a silent auction.

The club draws membership from Avon, Simsbury, West Hartford and other area towns. Avon residents Linda Stein, Sara Linsley, and Jodi Levine, and Farmington resident Mike Dopp were on the tennis committee that came up with the idea for the fundraiser.

The winning team in the tournament received a tennis bag and there was also a silent auction.

Wethersfield-based Team Towanda Foundation, a non-profit that gives support and provides information to cancer patients, was also present.
