Aid for the Philippines: Watch out for Scammers
The Internal Revenue Service has issued a consumer alert about possible scams taking place in the wake of Typhoon Haiyan (known as Yolanda in the Philippines). Following major disasters such as this Typhoon that devastated the area on November 8, 2013, it is common for scammers to impersonate charities to get money or private information from taxpayers. If you are unfamiliar with a charity, it is important to know how to detect if it is a fraud. Accounting Today tells how you can detect a fraudulent charity; read here.
One genuine charity aiding the Philippines is The Love for Life Foundation of Philippine American Physicians in America, which is out of Ledyard, CT and MA.
The Love for Life Foundation was founded in 2005 by Dr. Jesus A. Datu, a former U.S. Navy commander who has been very active in the relief missions sponsored by the U.S. Navy to the local populace. The non-profit was started in the efforts to serve indigent families in the most rural areas of the Philippines who can’t access even basic medical care and treatment.
