Farmington School Community Mourns Loss of Kindergartener

West District Elementary School is offering counseling for students, faculty and parents after the death of a kindergarten student at the school.

Amrita Munjulari, 6, passed away Sept. 19 at John Dempsey Hospital in Farmington, according to her obituary.

"Amrita was a kind, caring and fun-loving little girl who will be greatly missed by all," her obituary on legacy.com states.  

Farmington Superintendent Kathleen Greider sent a letter to Farmington families across the district late last week about the tragic loss. 

"It is with deep sadness that I inform you of the sudden passing of Amrita Munjulari, a student at West District Elementary School," Greider wrote. "Our students mean the world to us and the passing of Amrita is devastating to all members of the Farmington Board of Education and school district community."

Greider spoke of the devastation of the news at Monday's school board meeting. The meeting was originally scheduled to be held at West District, but the board moved the meeting to the high school given the circumstances. 

Munjulari will be remembered as an enthusiastic girl, according to Greider. 

"Amrita's enthusiastic approach brought great joy to everyone who was fortunate to be a part of her life," Greider wrote in her letter. "The Farmington school district community extends their deepest sympathy to the [sic] Amrita's parents and the entire Munjulari family."

West District Principal Sharon Lowery "has provided resources to parents so that parents can speak to their child(ren) about the passing of their beloved friend," Greider wrote. She sent the materials to parents with her letter. 

She closed by quoting Lowery's letter to West District parents, "Amrita will be deeply missed each day by her many friends here at West District. We will remember Amrita for her enthusiasm and a smile that could light up a room."

"Please keep Amrita and the entire Munjulari family in your thoughts at this difficult time," Greider wrote. 

The funeral service was held over the weekend.

Munjulari is survived by her parents, Shyam and Madhavi and several other relatives, according to her obituary. To read the full obituary, click on the link provided.
