¡Feliz Cinco de Mayo!: Revisiting the Spanish Language

¿Algo parece diferente en este artículo de Avon Patch?

 En honor de cinco de mayo quería escribir en español. Va a ser muy corto porque hace muchos años que hablaba español. Perdón si hay errores. Mi profesora de español en el colegio de Farmington (¡FHS!) vive en Avon. Entonces, estoy segura que ella puede corregirme si es necessario.  (¡Hola Lisa Kapcinski! ¿Qué te parece? Comente si estás leyendo.)

Avon Patch no es lo primero a publicar en español. Tenemos Patches latinos en California. ¡Actualmente, un compañero en el oeste del país – , director de South Gate Patch en California – graduó de Bates College en 2009 como yo! Que pequeño es el mundo.

Estudié en Alicante, España en la primavera de 2008. Hoy, la lengua queda en mi mente.

A veces, echo de menos hablar en español. Hay una secreteria en el edificio del director de Avon quien habla español y practico con ella. Se llama Xenia Manson. Gracias, Xenia. Aun que hablo con errores de gramática y accento, aprecio la oportunidad de hablar español otra vez.

También, mi Facebook es en español para que no lo olvide. He escrito un libro sobre estudiar en España que tiene muchos diálogos españoles. Se llama Please Pardon My Spanglish. Quiero publicarlo.

Es extraño a ser americana y añorar hablar un idioma extranjero que no es mío. Pero es mío de alguna manera porque cuando aprendes hablar en español, abre nuevos formas de comunicar. Español es parte de mí.

In honor of Cinco de Mayo, I want to write in Spanish. It’s going to be short because it’s been awhile since I’ve spoken Spanish. My apologies if there are mistakes. My Farmington High School Spanish teacher lives in Avon. So, I’m sure that she can correct me as necessary. (Hey, Lisa Kapcinski! What do you have to say? Comment if you’re reading).

Avon Patch is not the first to publish in Spanish. We have Latino Patches in California. Actually, one of my west coast colleagues – , local editor of South Gate Patch in California – graduated from Bates College in 2009 like me. What a small world.

Also, there is Baldwin Park Patch and Lynwood Patch. Hey guys!

I studied in Alicante, Spain en spring 2008. Today the language lingers in my mind.

Sometimes I miss speaking Spanish. A secretary in the speaks it and I practice with her. Her name is Xenia Manson. Thank you, Xenia. Even though I speak with gramatical mistakes and a bad accent, I appreciate the opportunity to speak Spanish again.

Also, my Facebook is in Spanish so I won’t forget it. I have written a book about studying in Spain that contains many Spanish dialogues. It’s called Please Pardon My Spanglish and I hope to publish it someday.

It’s strange to be an American and long to speak a foreign language that is not mine. But it is mine in away because when you learn Spanish, it opens new forms of communication. Spanish is part of me.
