[Update] Country Club Road Open, Chevas Still Closed

What are you doing to brave the aftermath of the storm and the power outage?

Update, 10:16 p.m., Oct. 30

Country Club Road has reopened and Chevas Road is still closed, according to Avon Public Works Highway Foreman Paul Welsh.

Avon Mountain is passable both on the Avon and West Hartford side, but traffic gets clogged at Bishop's Corner because of the line of cars waiting to pump gas at the Mobil station.

Update, 5:53 p.m., Oct. 30

Waterville Road will be closed for at least two to four more hours, according to Lt. Ken Sedlak of the Avon Fire Police. There are several trees down on Route 10 in Avon and Farmington, predominantly in the westbound lane coming from Route 44. Some wires are down, as well.

A large tree fell across Old Farms Road just after the bridge coming from Waterville Road and wires are down on the road, so the route is impassable.

Chevas Road is still closed, according to Sedlak.

West Avon Road is clear.

Traffic lights in Avon are not working because of the power outage, so Sedlak reminds drivers to treat those intersections as four-way stops even if there are not temporary stop signs in place.

It is difficult to turn onto Route 44 because many drivers already on the state highway are continuing through the intersection without stopping, however, some drivers are heeding the four-way stop rule.

Almost every business on Route 44 is closed. Big Y is open, but is not selling refrigerated items. The meat, dairy, fish and sandwich stations are closed. The line to get hot coffee in Big Y extended almost all the way across that section of the store.

The Mobil and Shell gas stations in Avon are not selling gas. The closest place to get gas is at the Mobil station in Bishop's Corner in West Hartford, but traffic is jammed on Route 44 at the intersection with North Main St. because of it. The Phillips and Shell gas stations in Bishop's Corner are also out of gas.

Update, 2:41 p.m., Oct. 30

Avon Public Schools will be closed on Monday due to storm damage and the town-wide power outage, Superintendent of Schools Gary Mala said Sunday afternoon.

School activities are also canceled.

Mala said that school may have to be closed for a few days, but he said that he will evaluate the situation this evening before making a decision.

Avon High School is currently operating as an emergency shelter. If the high school fills up, Mala said that school and town officials will assess if another shelter needs to be opened.

Many area gas stations are closed.

Cell service for both Verizon and AT&T is also weak, but text messages may go through.

Traffic lights in Avon are out, so treat them as four-way stop signs.

Play rehearsal for the Theatre Guild of Simsbury's "Curtains" at Simsbury High School Sunday is canceled and if the high school is closed Monday, rehearsal will most likely be canceled again Monday night. The Locks of Love event at Cuts for Peanuts in Avon is also canceled.

Original Story, Oct. 30

After an unexpected October snowfall dropped more than half a foot of snow on Avon, the town remains in the dark Sunday morning.

Connecticut Light & Power is reporting that as of 8:45 a.m., 100 percent of customers are without power in town and more than 763,000 statewide are without power.

Country Club, Chevas and Huckleberry Hill Road are closed due to downed trees and wires, police said. Many other roads in town are at least partially blocked. Police and fire officials said there are so many areas reported, there could be additional closures.

Traffic lights in town were not working Saturday night.
