Avon Declares State of Local Disaster Emergency

Schools are closed and the emergency shelter at Avon High School remains open.

Town officials have declared Avon a state of local disaster emergency.

"Safety remains our paramount concern," a press release posted on the town website Tuesday stated. "Opening roads to public safety vehicles is ongoing at this time and debris removal is also underway."

While major roads like Chevas Road, Lovely Street, Waterville Road, West Avon Road and Route 44 remain passable, there are still power lines and trees down throughout town. Huckleberry Hill Road had snapped utility poles, downed wires and trees on Monday, and though cars were able to get through, it would be best to avoid it.

Old Farms Road was closed Monday night from the Waterville entrance because of downed trees and wires just beyond the bridge, however, Old Farms Road is otherwise accessible all the way to Fisher Meadows. Tillotson Road had a lot of trees down beyond the Avon town line in Farmington.Thompson Road was blocked by several fallen trees.

"Power lines and trees are down throughout the town," the town press release stated. "Residents are strongly urged to exercise the utmost caution around downed and sagging power lines. Downed lines may be energized and residents are advised to stay clear of them."

Residents have indicated that Winding Lane and the Stony Corners Road areas in Avon were heavily affected by fallen trees.

Whispering Pines regained power after 8 p.m. Monday. However, cable, internet and landlines were still out on the street.

"No cable,internet or landline with Xfinity Comcast," Avon resident Marcia Duggan Wells wrote on the Avon Patch Facebook page Monday. "Modem wouldn't take reboot due to no signal. They aren't making service appts until further notice as too busy. After driving through maze of down ...ed trees, wires, poles right before dark I'm impressed &amazed to have electricity back so soon. Kudos & heartfelt thanks to all those working so hard in horrible conditions. Miracle Workers indeed!"

Town staff is coordinatin debris removal efforts with CL&P, which has a liaison positioned in Avon's emergency operations center at the .

Avon High School continues to be open as an emergency shelter. Residents should bring necessary supplies like medications, snacks, special dietary needs, oxygen supplies if required, blankets, clothes, means of entertainment and any other personal affects.

There are cots at the high school, so residents can stay overnight if needed in the heated building. Residents can also shower there and recharge phones and electronics.
