Avon Police Bike Patrol: 'It's Not Just About Crime Prevention,' Lieutenant Says

Have you seen Avon police officers cycling?

Avon police officers on bike patrol are able to access parts of town like Rails to Trails that a car cannot while investigating crime and respond to medical calls. One bike patrol officer even pulled a car over recently in town.

But they also hope to be role models to kids and a community resource, all the while raising awareness about bike safety and stopping to make sure kids know to wear their helmets.

"It's not just crime prevention," Avon police Lt. Kelly Walsh said. "It’s community relations. They love going out and talking to people.”

The bike patrol unit is leading a Bike Safety and Skills Clinic at Pine Grove School near the playground on Saturday that is open to the public.

Sgt. Thomas Jacius is running it and Walsh will be present, as well as bike patrol Officers Todd Akerley, Ryan Dery, Ryan Cuscovitch, John O’Neill and Courtney Wilson.

The event runs from 9 a.m. to noon. Pine Grove School is located at 151 Scoville Rd.
