Avon Police Continue to Investigate 'Self-Inflicted' Shot Fired Near Lenox Road

No arrests have been made at this time, and no one was injured.

Police continue to investigate a "self-inflicted" shot fired near Lenox Road just before 10 p.m. last Thursday.

Lt. Kelly Walsh, the Avon Police Department's public information officer, confirmed that police retrieved the handgun that was the source of the shot. There "was also evidence constant with a bullet" on a bicycle helmet at the scene, she said.

The helmet was owned by a "male juvenile," who initially told officers when they arrived to investigate reports of a single shot fired that another individual shot at him with a handgun. He also told them a second person was with the individual. The teenager, who neighbors said is a student at Avon High School, also told police that the bullet struck his bicycle helmet. He was not injured, police said.

Upon further investigation, police discovered that the biker was actually the one that fired the shot that hit his own helmet.

Lenox Road is off of Hollister Drive, about a mile from Avon High School, and there are only six houses on the street. Access to the road was blocked off from all side streets Thursday after the incident until 12:30 a.m.

Neighbors who heard the shot only reported hearing one shot, also indicating that it sounded like it was fired near the intersection of Lenox Road and Lexington Drive.
