[Update] Live Wires on Burnham Road

Many roads in town are closed, and some are flooded.

Irene may have downgraded to a tropical storm, but the wind and rain still caused minor damage to homes on Sunday morning. Some roads are closed and 1,810 customers in Avon are without power as of 7:57 p.m.

Burnham Road is closed due to a live wire. Patch reader Lori Shield wrote in an e-mail to Patch that a large oak tree across the road at the "intersections of Sleepy Hollow and Cheltenham Road." A neighbor "placed some small orange soccer cones several feet beyond the top of the tree where the live wires are...." She cautioned fellow Avon residents to be careful now that its dark out and visibility is poor.

Secret Lake Road is closed beyond the Avon Volunteer Fire Department Company Two fire station due to flooding. Many yards on the private road are flooded and the lake level is high. Old Farms Road is closed at Waterville Road and Thompson Road due to flooding. Tillotson Road was closed at the Old Farms intersection.

New Road is closed at Huckleberry Hill Road due to flooding.

Avon Emergency Management Director and Fire Marshal James DiPace said he expected more traffic on Route 44 while Route 4 in Farmington is still closed due to flooding.

Around 2 p.m., the Avon Police Department received a report that at least one horse was loose on West Avon Road. Members of the First Company Governor's Horse Guard said that all of their horses were safe and in their stalls, and that Duke, the horse nextdoor, escaped. Camlynn Miller-Stevens, whose family runs Miller Foods on Arch Road, said that she was not aware whether the family's horse, Duke got out, but at 2:30 p.m., he was safe in his stall.

There is a six-foot sink hole on the side of the road at the intersection of Country Club Road and Hawley Hill Road that is marked with town barricades. Country Club is not closed.

Waterville Road is blocked off at Valley View Drive due to a live wire that was still steaming as of 5 p.m. More updates will be provided as they are confirmed.

West Avon Road is closed between Arch Road and Biltmore Court due to a tree that snapped and fell on the power lines. The second entrance to Chidsey Road off of Waterville Road is also closed due to a fallen utility pole and a tree that fell across the road.

There are downed trees and power lines on Deercliff Road, which is is also closed, and access to West Hills Drive is blocked off due to a fallen tree.

Trees are down throughout down and some fell on homes on Tamara Circle and Anvil Road this morning, causing minor damage, but no one was injured, DiPace said.

Tillotson and Old Farms roads are filling up with water and DiPace said those roads will likely close due to eventual flooding, though they are currently still open.

Public Works Director Bruce Williams said his staff has been out on and off since last night, stationed on the west and east side of town, responding to reports of downed trees.

He said that the storm has been "quieter than expected," but both he and DiPace urge residents to stay off the roads. Although the rain is dying down, Williams said strong winds are still anticipated throughout the afternoon and that the ground is saturated with water.
