Avon Superintendent: 'This Is A Scam.'

Avon Public Schools officials give Avon parents and residents this warning. Has it happened to you? Tell us in the comments.

People identifying themselves as school and town officials have approached Avon residents about buying books and software.

But it's a scam, school leaders alerted parents and residents Monday.

The people are neither affiliated with Avon Public Schools nor the Town of Avon and are not sanctioned by the schools to sell these materials, Superintendent Gary Mala said.

The individuals posing as school and town employees attempted to sell "academic" books and "children's computer software that they claim would contribute to children’s success in our schools," Mala said in a letter he wrote to the community that was also distributed to the media Monday.

School officials made Avon police aware of the incidents. Otherwise, the police department has not received any complaints of that nature, Lt. Kelly Walsh told Patch Monday.

Region 10 schools in Harwinton and Burlington have also reported similar incidents, Mala said.

"These individuals are misrepresenting themselves as being affiliated with the Avon Public Schools and/or the Town of Avon," Mala said.

"Please know that neither the Town of Avon nor the Avon Public Schools have sanctioned this activity," Mala said. "This is a scam."

Mala urges residents targeted with this scam to contact police.

"If you are approached by any individual representing himself/herself as described above, please notify the Avon Police," Mala wrote. "If possible, please take note of any information (description of individual, model and make of any vehicle, license plate, etc.) that may assist the Avon Police to investigate this situation."
