Canton Driver Cited for Going Too Fast After Colliding with Boulder in Avon

The accident occurred on July 6 at the intersection of Forge Drive and High Ridge Hollow, leaving one with right arm pains.

Police issued a Canton resident a misdemeanor summons for charges of operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license, traveling fast and failure to maintain the proper lane after he collided with a boulder in a 2005 Ford on July 6.

Daniel Savoia, 21, 194 Wright Rd., Canton, was turning left onto High Ridge Hollow in Avon while traveling at a "high rate of speed" northbound on Forge Drive, according to the accident report. Police said he lost control of the vehicle and struck a large boulder off the road at 103 Forge Dr., slightly damaging the boulder and the lawn of Victor Tirado's Avon property.

Although the report indicated that police detected "the odor of an alcoholic beverage" on Savoia's breath, the results of his field sobriety test were negative.

American Medical Response brought Kayla Michel Spaulding, 20, of Avon, to the University of Connecticut Health Center to be treated for pain in her right arm. Spaulding was in the front passenger seat during the accident. Michael Spaulding owns the car Savoia drove, and he lives in the same home as Kayla Spaulding, police reported based on the registration information for the car.

Elise Koczan, 21, of Avon, told police she was sitting on Spaulding's lap during the accident. She turned down medical treatment for a bump she noticed on her left knee. Both Daniel and John Savoia, 15, of Canton, the rear seat passenger, also refused medical treatment.

Savoia told police he was going 40 miles per hour and one of the passengers told him to take a left last minute.

Forge Drive, which is a two-directional road with no "visible divider" is in a 25-mile-per hour speed limit zone. There was no stop sign on the Forge Drive portion of the intersection.

Towstar removed the vehicle from the scene due to damage on the entire front end of the car.

Savoia is scheduled to appear at Hartford Superior Court on July 20 at 9 a.m.
