[Update] VIDEO: Avon Firefighter Taken to Hospital After Camden Way Blaze

Emergency personnel from several surrounding towns assisted Avon crews with the fire at 3 Camden Way Saturday morning.

A woman and three children made it safely out of a blaze at their 3 Camden Way home Saturday morning, but an Avon firefighter was taken to the hospital for injuries resulting from the battle to put out the flames.

"As far as I know right now, we only have one firefighter who was injured in the firefighting," Chief Michael Trick said.

The man, who was conscious when he was carried into an American Medical Response ambulance on a stretcher, is probably going to be okay, Trick said. The fire department has not released his identity or the extent of his injuries.

Avon Fire Marshal James DiPace is investigating the cause of the structure fire at the house owned by Linda Poore, which started around 8 a.m. The fire spread to the attic, he said. Firefighters hacked into the roof to make a hole to vent the heat and also opened and broke windows to get the smoke out.

"The interior is pretty heavily compromised," Trick said. "The structure is still fairly intact, but the interior and all the belongings are pretty much gone."

Poore and her children are currently staying with a neighbor.

"I have offered anything I could do for her," said Rashed Ahmed, who lives across the street.

This morning, he saw flames coming from an area of the house near Poore's kitchen.

"She had a very nice house, Ahmed said. "She did so much work on the house."

Ahmed and his wife, Saima were handing out hot chocolate to the firefighters.

The Bernard family stood in shock as they watched dozens of fire personnel from Avon, Canton, Collinsville, Farmington Simsbury and Burlington work to put out the fire at their neighbor's house.

"The back was engulfed in fire," Abha Bernard said, referring to the rear of the off-white Colonial-style house that was blackened from the flames and smoke.

As of 10:20 a.m. some smoke was still escaping the open windows and fire personnel had opened a hole in the roof to create a vent.

The fire took two to three hours to contain, but has been put out.

Camden Way houses are relatively new developments and Poore bought the house in 2007, according to town property assessment records.

"It was a hard fight and our surrounding communities once again came to our support and assistance and did their best and we got it under control," Trick said.
