Cyclist's Condition Improves After Accident with Avon Driver

Rider hit on Route 179 in Canton listed in good condition Monday.

As of early Monday evening, a bicyclist hit by an Avon driver's car on Route 179 in Canton last week was in good condition, a Hartford Hospital spokeswoman said.

On Friday afternoon the cyclist had been in fair condition and a day prior was listed as serious.

Life Star flew the rider, Jan St. George, of the Marion section of Southington, to Hartford Hospital on Wednesday, March 14. Avon resident Lee Morgan's car hit the cyclist on River Road (Route 179) near Gildersleeve Avenue, police said.

St. George received some assistance from an off duty medic at the scene, police said.

Police are awaiting the results from the North Central Municipal Accident Reconstruction team before determining if any charges are to be filed and the exact details of the crash.

here is what I do not understand. These cyclists think the road belongs to them. Half of them dont even have reflective suits. They are asking for trouble if they want to share the narrow roads of Avon-Canton with cars SUVs and trucks. Lee Morgan: you have my sympathy. Now Only if enough cyclists get hit this summer, may be then they will learn to stay off the roads !!!

Jim How can you be so heartless and unsympathetic. A woman was hit by a car and needed to be air lifted to the hospital. She wasn't on a a narrow road, but on a road with a bike lane. If you would check your history you would realize it was The League for American Bicyclists who successfully lobbied for paved roads nearly 100 years ago.

According to the picture, she was using a road bike - not a trail bike. She had every much a right to be on the road as the car that struck her. Drivers use these roads as if it were a racetrack. Have some basic decency people. It's not just about you.

While all of the above comments have merit, I have to agree that some bicyclists ride as if they own the road. How many times I have passed riders riding side-by-side I've lost count! Many don't even stay in the bike lane when there is one. Yes, we all need to share the road and drivers do need to slow down, but the cyclists can do their part as well.

The rider was wearing a bright yellow jacket and pink helmet. She was biking on the trail and crossing the road In the crosswalk to the other side of trail when hit. The motorist was found to be at fault. That portion of the trail needs a 4 way crossing/flashing/ beeping light like Unionville New Britain Ave/177 intersection. Jan St George
