Driver in Head-on Collision Charged with DUI

The following information was provided by the Avon Police Department and does not indicate a conviction.

One of the drivers in a head-on collision at the intersection of Old Farms and Tillotson roads Saturday was charged with operation of a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol.

Police said Carl Whitman Lawton, 58, 41 Old Farms Rd., Avon, crossed the double yellow lines into the eastbound lane, causing the accident. He was about three miles from home.

The occupants of both vehicles were already out of their cars when police arrived.

Police found a vodka bottle hidden in Lawton's sock. Officers said they charged him with operating under the influence at 8:47 a.m. after he failed a field sobriety test.

He was also cited for failure to drive in the proper lane, failure to carry registration or insurance identification, and failure to wear a seat belt.

Police released him on a $500 bond. Lawton is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 2.
