Firefighters Knock Down Lovely Street Fire

Homeowner believes lightning was the cause.

A Lovely Street homeowner believes a Monday afternoon fire at the residence was caused by lightning but as of early evening officials had not yet confirmed the cause, according to Fire Marshal James DiPace.

The fire at 535 Lovely St. was reported at approximately 4:30 p.m. Monday.

A woman who lives at the house, but declined to be identified, said she was sitting at a desk when she heard a loud noise, which she said was lightning.

"I looked out the window and saw smoke coming up," she said. "It all happened very quickly. I have to say the fire department was great."

The woman called in the fire and the homeowner's son shut off the power and the gas line, which was involved, DiPace said. The 500-gallon propane tank itself was not involved, fire officials said.

The biggest challenge for firefighters was a long, steep driveway to the home, DiPace said. However, a fire official said it was put out pretty quickly.

DiPace said there was some fire damage to the back of the garage area as well as extensive smoke damage.

One firefighter at the scene did suffer an ankle injury, officials said.
