Letter to the Editor: Avon Resident Thanks Firefighters for Farmington Fatal Crash Response

The following letter to the editor was submitted by Michael Farrell, of Avon.

Dear Editor,

Recently, a horrendous car crash occurred in the center of Farmington.  While heavily reported, the performance of the town’s volunteer firefighters in the face of a very dynamic, and dangerous situation is equally newsworthy.

First responders were met with rapidly unfolding, potentially deadly circumstances.  Live power lines down, compromised structural integrity of the building, torrents of water from breached plumbing gushing throughout the scene, and a severed gas main rapidly filling the structure with explosive levels of gas.  Lives hung in the balance, and one of the town’s most iconic, historical buildings was on the brink of destruction.

With professionalism and surgical precision, the men and women of these department’s worked amidst chaos and great danger, systematically mitigating each hazard to transform mayhem into as successful an outcome as one could expect under extreme conditions.  This was one of those rare “out of the box” incidents where our first responders truly needed their A-game to save lives and property, and the fire department brought it!

The residents of Farmington can rest peacefully at night, knowing their firefighter neighbors, ordinary people, do extraordinary things- quietly, competently, and with little fanfare. That’s the real story.
