Police Describe Week of Bad Driving, Bad Drivers

An Avon teen suspected of using a speed trailer as a urinal was arrested in Farmington on charges of fourth-degree criminal mischief. A police officer for the Metropolitan District Commission spotted Christopher Carlson, 18, of 108 Henley Way, Avon, walking from the trailer on Route 4 back to a parked car, Farmington police said. The officer found beer in the car, police said. Carlson and two passengers were cited under a town ordinance prohibiting possession of alcohol by a minor.

A pickup truck driver was snorting heroin behind the wheel when he veered into the oncoming lane and nearly hit a police cruiser, Vernon police said. The officer swerved to avoid a collision, then turned around and pulled over the truck, police said. The driver, Carl Smith, 46, of Vernon, admitted he had been snorting heroin and his passenger admitted that she was carrying heroin in her purse, police said. Smith was arrested on charges of possession of heroin and a string of other drug offenses and motor vehicle violations. The passenger, Terri Judd, 44, of Vernon, was arrested on charges of heroin possession and other drug offenses.

Simsbury police are still looking for a bold thief. Someone removed the sign for the Tariffville Post Office from the building last month and made off with it. The post office has been closed since February because of structural problems, but officials said that if it reopens, they’ll be needing the sign back.

Naugatuck police said they arrested two people who were driving the wrong way on Route 8 in separate incidents on the same day. Joseph Glovinski, 24 of Naugatuck, was arrested on charges of driving under the influence, reckless driving under 85 mph and driving the wrong way on a divided highway. Jefre Martinez, 27, of Waterbury, was arrested on charges of driving under the influence, drinking while driving and driving the wrong way on a divided highway.

 A man who tried to drive up a wheelchair ramp at the Westport Woman’s Club was arrested on charges of driving under the influence, third-degree criminal mischief and simple trespass, Westport police said. The suspect, Benjamin Biggers, 53, was almost home. He lives a few hundred feet away, police said.

A garbage truck lost its driveshaft on Route 2A in Montville and the mechanism went spinning into a nearby parking lot – for the Montville Police Department. Vehicles owned by four police officers were damaged, and the driveshaft narrowly missed an officer who was walking through the lot.
