Police: Driver Misses Stop Sign, Cuts into Path of Former Avon Town Official's Car in Crash

A passenger in the van involved was injured in the two-car Country Club Road crash.

A Farmington driver whose van was struck by another vehicle after she breezed through a stop sign across traffic onto Country Club Road blamed her failure to stop at the intersection with Burnham Road on her unfamiliarity with the area.

Police cited the Honda Odyssey driver, Yanjin Guo, 43, of 3 Oxford Rd. in Farmington, with failure to obey a stop sign.

Guo's passenger, Li Shui Fang, of 15 Townsend Rd. in Farmington, was injured when Avon resident William Robert Hooper Jr.'s Chevy Pickup truck struck the front right passenger side of the car. The accident happened at 9:36 a.m. Fang was transported to St. Francis Hospital in Hartford for treatment of possible chest and head injuries. Avon police said Wednesday that she was in stable condition.

Guo was driving northbound on Burnham Road and traveled into Hooper's path on Country Club Road after failing to stop at a stop sign, police said. She realized too late that she missed the stop sign and stopped in the intersection.

Hooper, 54, of 103 Country Club Rd., told police that the minivan pulled out in front of him suddenly and that he tried to stop but couldn't.

Hooper is a former member of the Board of Finance and was once a Town Council candidate.

The Avon Volunteer Fire Department and American Medical Response responded to the accident. A-1 Towing towed both cars to the town's impound lot on Arch Road.

The entire right side of the van, registered to Remn Min Guo who lives with Yanjin, was damaged. Hooper's Chevy Pickup was also damaged on the entire front end.

The North Central Municipal Accident Reconstruction Squad investigated the crash and measured the vehicles and skid marks.
