Police Quarantine Avon Mill Apartment During White Powder Scare

A resident at the Avon Mill apartment complex on Avonwood Road called 911 Friday to report finding white powder sprinkled over his mail.

Police quarantined the man's apartment during the investigation of the "suspicious powder incident" and the two occupants were "decontaminated."

Avon public safety officials responded at 4:44 p.m., including Avon police, the Avon Volunteer Fire Department, Simsbury firefighters, UConn firefighters, members of the Capital Region Hazardous Materials Team, Department of Energy and Environmental Protection officials and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service.

The hazmat team tested the substance and determined it was not "hazardous."

Officials suspended the quarantine around 7:30 p.m. and the residents were permitted to return to their apartment.

Police said there were no injuries.
