Small Fire at Maid Pro Leads to Evacuation of Canton Daycare

The evacuation was a precaution to protect the children while firefighters investigated and quickly extinguished the fire.

Quick response from the Town of Canton Volunteer Fire & EMS Department prevented a fire from spreading in a River Road business Tuesday.

Firefighters on Engine 4 and an ambulance responded to 88 River Road, the office of Maid Pro, on report of a smoke condition at 11:41 a.m. on Feb. 25. As a precaution, the neighboring Sunny Days Daycare was evacuated while firefighters investigated, according to Sylvia Cancela, the department's public relations officer.

The source of the smoke was a couple boxes containing papers in a back room of Maid Pro, Cancela said. The fire was extinguished within a matter of minutes, but firefighters spent about an hour conducting overhaul and ventilation.

New Hartford and Avon responded to the scene as part of a mutual aid agreement.

A bus was initially called in to move the students out of the cold, but given how quickly the fire was extinguished, it was cancelled and the students were able to return back to the daycare at 12:30 p.m., Cancela said.
