[Update] Stove On When Power Restored Sparks Fire on Rosewood

A second house across the street had an electrical fire not long after the power came back on.

Town emergency staff has warned residents to make sure their stoves are off and cleared before power is restored and a fire on Rosewood Road in Avon just before noon Tuesday exemplified why.

Upon preliminary investigation, Avon Fire Marshal James DiPace said, it appeared that the Rosewood resident had placed food from the refrigerator on the stove. When power came back on, recharging the electric stove, which was on, that may have triggered the house fire. Another Avon resident came home Monday to power and a stove up in flames, but was able to contain it.

"You need to make sure as stuff gets re-energenized that everything's off," DiPace said.

There was damage to the kitchen cabinets and heavy smoke in the house, deeming the home unliveable for the time being, DiPace said.

Avon volunteer firefighters responded to the call around 11:55 a.m. and firefighters from Canton and Simsbury also responded to help.

There were no injuries, as the residents weren't home.

Not long after the fire, another one sparked across the street, most likely related to the power restoration and a damaged wire feeding electricity into the home, DiPace said.

That fire did not cause significant damage.
