Three Charged in Walmart Incident in Which Shoplifting Suspect Pulled Out a Knife

Avon police say the suspect quickly dropped the knife and no shoppers were in danger.

Three males are in custody after a Monday afternoon Walmart shoplifting incident during which one of the men pulled out a knife, Avon police said.

The three were allegedly attempting to shoplift around 2:30 p.m. Monday when "loss prevention" personnel at the store approached them, Lt. Kelly Walsh said. One suspect pulled out a knife and dropped it as he ran off to a car with another suspect, police said. No one was in any imminent danger from the weapon, police said.

The third suspect remained in store custody and the other two were apprehended a short time later when officers stopped the car in front of the Avon Police Department on Route 44.

Charged were:

  • Gilberto Vazquez-Reyes, 46, of 465 New Britain Ave., Hartford, was charged with conspiracy to commit sixth-degree larceny, conspiracy to commit first-degree robbery, disobeying the signal of an officer the first time, interfering with an officer, operating a motor vehicle without a license, possession/use of drug paraphernalia, possession of narcotics and reckless driving.
  • Carlos Lopez, 33, of 160 New Britain Ave., Hartford, was charged with conspiracy to commit first-degree robbery, sixth-degree larceny, possession/use of drug paraphernalia and possession of narcotics.
  • Anthony Marrero, 25, of 150 Babcock St., Hartford, was charged with conspiracy to commit sixth-degree larceny, possession/use of drug paraphernalia, possession of narcotics and first-degree robbery.

All are due in court today.

They guy who pulled the knife should be charged with armed robbery. These guys probably did not look like they belonged in Avon, oh year that's right the Avon police can't profile suspects any more, they have to wait for the perps to actually commit crimes.

I grew up in Canton and check this site occasionally for local news. The shoplifiting incident at Walmart is unfortunate and I hope the three charged can be rehabilitated by their encounter with the legal system. I was disgusted by Paul Bahre's comment, "These guys probably did not look like they belonged in Avon." Because they have latino last names? Because they're from New Hartford, a couple towns over? I now live in the San Francisco Bay Area in a largely latino community. Mr. Bahre's comment was ignorant, racist, and indicative of one of the largest drawbacks of living in rural New England. I hope members of the community can counteract disgraceful attitudes like Mr. Bahre's so children growing up in such an environment do not harbor such obvious prejudice.

Most knives should be illegal, especially the long, scary-looking ones. Butter knives should require a permit.

Allyson, They were junkie gang bangers from Hartford driving around in a junk car looking for to steal stuff for their next fix. I never made reference to their race. Just that the cops can't see what appears to be a car full of drug addled junkie gang bangers and pull them over without the ACLU getting all over the department. The police I guess can't be proactive at all and they have to wait for these violent felons to act before they check them out. Back in the day cops would pull cars like that over and if they did not find anything wrong they would remind these fine examples of citizenship that they would be watched very closely. If yo don't like my opinion that's too bad. if you can't look into a car and tell pretty much that the occupants are probably people that you should not mess with then I feel sorry for you for not being able to have at least a modicum of self preservation when it comes to scoping the situation out and making a determination safe or not safe.

We need our police to go back to profiling..oh well too bad for those that beleive profiling is discrimination. In many cases, the Avon Police have keep us safer when they profiled. This opens the door for the crud of society to enter a peaceful town and reak havoc.

the pd does a great job working the plaza. when you refer to druggies are you referring to the kids in avon and simsbury? word has it they take prescription pills like they are eating skittles.

stan== the recent incident involving the two males dressed in black and entering a residence while people were at home, probably the suspects are from avon. crud of society? there are a lot of nice people out of hartford, new britain, etc. who work very hard and are law abiding citizens. there are kids from avon and simsbury who go into hartford to buy drugs.

Police should be able to pull anyone over who "doesn't look right". It's not about race, it's about someone who looks like they may be looking for trouble. The police can't protect society unless they can follow their instincts. My husband got pulled over at 3:00 a.m. in Avon one night just because of the time of night plus he was driving an older car. He was coming home from work. He doesn't mind getting pulled over if it means that the police can do it to others who may actually be up to no good. So I agree with Paul. I am originally from the Bronx so I'm not living in a dream world. This is reality. Avon has to wake up and live in the real world.

HI RONNIE! THANKS FOR THE INPUT. I BELIEVE WE SHOULD BE VIGILANT AND BE AWARE OF OUR SURROUNDINGS. THERE ARE KIDS WHO LOOK LIKE SCHOLARS WHO HAVE MORE ISSUES THAN KIDS IN THE URBAN AREAS. I RECENTLY SAW A VERY WELL GROOMED TEENAGER ON THE VERGE OF PASSING OUT (IN THE VALLEY). WE IGNORED HIM.
Rose Renaldo December 30, 2012 at 02:07 AM
You would! Seems your to intent on profiling the teens of the valley anyways.

GREW UP IN SIMS. WE REALLY KNOW WHAT'S GOING ON. BOTTOM LINE IS TO BE VIGILANT. MY FRIENDS AND I OFFERED ASSISTANCE TO A SIMSKUNK BECAUSE HE WASN'T FEELING WELL DUE TO BEING INTOXICATED. WE OFFERED TO CALL HIS PARENTS SO THEY COULD PICK HIM UP. THE MOTHER HAD THE NERVE AND ASKED TO DRIVE HIM HOME. WE DECLINED AND SHE BECAME RUDE. HOPEFULLY, SHE TOOK CARE OF HIM.

A desperado is desperado, young, old. Its the police's job is to head them off at the pass, whenever possible. As a civilian, citizen I feel it's my responsebilty to be vigiliant.

THIS INCIDENT IS NOTHING COMPARED TO WHAT (2) AVON RESIDENTS DID THIS WEEK. MAN BARRICADING HIMSELF AND ANOTHER ONE THREATENING HIS GIRL FRIEND. THERE MUST HAVE BEEN A FULL MOON OVER AVON.
