Police: Driver Had Three Kids in Car During Burnham Road Crash [Update, March 16, 2 a.m.]

Avon police make an arrest due to a car crash earlier in the week.

Avon police arrested a driver who crashed into a telephone pole on Burnham Road at 6:29 p.m. Monday, causing it to snap in half.

Johann Wittig, 44, of 52 Cheltenhamway in Avon, was driving two 10-year-olds and a 6-year-old in his 2011 Chevrolet at the time of the accident, the accident report states.

Police charged him with "risk of injury to children,operation of a vehicle while under the influence "of liquor or drug or while having an elevated blood alcohol content" and implied consent to test refuse, according to the accident report and as confirmed under those statute numbers on the state website.

The pole, which SNET owns, fell on top of a car carrying the driver and three passengers, Avon police Lt. Kelly Walsh said.

All four people made it out of the car before police arrived and no one was injured, she said.

The "entire front end" of the car and roof were damaged in the accident and Edwards Motor Vehicle Service of Unionville towed the car.

Some residents in the area lost power. Connecticut Light & Power came to the scene of the accident to cut the power so that SNET could repair the damaged pole. The telephone pole is back in place police said.

Burnham Road was closed for several hours while SNET repaired the snapped pole.
