Avon Budget Referendum Voter Turnout Crawls at Just Over 5 Percent
Have you voted yet? You still have three hours to vote!
If voter turnout for Avon's budget referendum continues trending low like it has so far Wednesday, the proposed $81.76 million budget for 2013-14 will likely pass.
As of 5 p.m. Wednesday, 677 people have voted on the budget at the Avon Senior Center community room. That is slightly more than 5 percent of 12,182 registered voters in town.
In Avon, if the amount of people who have voted does not surpass 9 percent of registered voters, the budget automatically passes. Otherwise, it's decided by a majority vote.
"This isn't the first time we could be under 9 percent," Avon Town Clerk Ann Dearstyne said.
She said that it's happened before, including at Avon's second referendum in the late '90s when there was about a 6 or 7 percent voter turnout.
Avon residents will see a 2.6 tax rate increase over the present fiscal year if the budget passes. The mill rate would rise to 26.32.
The polls will remain open until 8 p.m. The Avon Senior Center is located at 635 West Avon Rd.
