Avon Considers Participation in AT&T Anti-Texting and Driving Campaign

The Town Council will discuss the proposal at its 7:30 p.m. meeting on Thursday, Sept. 12, 2013.

AT&T has asked Avon and other Connecticut towns to participate in a statewide campaign intended to make drivers aware of the dangers of texting while driving.

The cell phone company is planning on declaring Sept. 19 as a day dedicated to discouraging drivers from texting while driving.

The goal is to “remind people that texting and driving is not only dangerous, it is illegal, as well," Avon Town Council Chairman Mark Zacchio said.

Having a day of awareness about the risks of texting and driving serves to 'keep a reminder out there," he said.

Zacchio said that AT&T approached the town about the proposal on Wednesday, so the item will be discussed as a last-minute addition to the agenda.

The Town Council will meet in the Selectmen's Chamber in Town Hall, building 1.
