Hot? Don't Sweat It! Avon Keeps Cooling Center Open

Here's where you can go to beat the heat.

If you're looking for a place to cool down as temperatures climb during the heat wave, the town of Avon plans on keeping its cooling centers open through Saturday.

Earlier in the week, the town of Avon announced the Avon Senior Center and the Avon Free Public Library would be designated cooling centers for "any resident seeking respite from the heat and humidity," according to the town website.

Temperatures will reach the mid-90s on Friday with a heat index of about 102 degrees Fahrenheit, according to the National Weather Service. The weather service issued an excessive heat warning through Thursday night and said to expect high heat and humidity until Saturday. By the evening Friday, the heat should drop to as low as 74. Rain and thunderstorms are possibilities on Saturday and Sunday and temperatures will likely stay in the low 90s on Saturday, the weather service reports.

The weather service cautions against strenuous activity outside and spending too much time in the sun or "poorly ventilated areas" because of the risks of "heat illnesses." To avoid heat exhaustion, stay in the air conditioning, wear loosely-fitted clothing and drink a lot of fluids, the weather website states.

The senior center was open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. as a cooling center through Thursday and will be available again from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday and 1 to 5 p.m. on Saturday. The library, slated to stay open until 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday as a cooling center.

The senior center is located at 635 West Avon Rd. and the library is at 281 Country Club Rd. For more information, you can call the senior center at 860-675-4355 or reach the library at 860-673-9712.
