Avon Democrats Endorse Murphy for Senate

Avon Democrats unanimously endorsed U.S. Rep. Chris Murphy (CT-5) for Senate following its caucus Wednesday night.

"I met Chris when he first started running for Congress, as most of us did. He made it his business to be in the town and meet a lot of people," Avon Democratic Town Committee member Linda Merlin said, making the official motion to endorse him. "His ability to speak and listen to people and to really care about what matters, I just think that Chris would be a great senator."

If elected, Murphy will replace U.S. Sen. Joe Lieberman, who identifies as an "Independent Democrat" and was elected as an Independent for his fourth term in 2006, according to his website. He announced his retirement from the senate on Jan. 19, 2011, his biography on the website states.

Town Council member said that the endorsement should mean more than a vote and that Avon Democrats should help Murphy in whatever way needed, whether it be a financial contribution, help putting up signs or door-knocking.

"He's really accepting," Peña said. "He's really really good to deal with."

Murphy was also most recently endorsed by the Bethel and Danbury Democratic town committees, according to tweets he wrote on Jan. 10 and 11.

Lt. Gov. Nancy Wyman was keynote speaker at the beginning of the meeting at Town Hall and encouraged Democrats to stay involved by communicating their ideas and concerns to their leaders beyond helping them on the campaign trail.
