Avon Is One Step Closer to Thompson Road Athletic Complex

A new four-person committee will oversee preparations.

A new subcommittee has been appointed to oversee early prep for the new athletic complex town officials hope to open on Thompson Road, The Hartford Courant reports. The group is managing design work for the project, which has already begun.

Patch reported that the town of Avon purchased the 15.25-acres lot at 99 Thompson Road for about $1.5 million in 2003 and evaluated whether the land was polluted by the former time device factory, Town Council Chairman Mark Zacchio previously said. Town officials are hoping to build a playing field with synthetic turf and lights so games can take place after dusk.

Avon residents have high interest in a lighted synthetic turf field, according to town recreation officials.

"We are at the preliminary stage and so there is no point in appointing a formal building committee,"  said town council Chairman Mark Zacchio, according to The Hartford Courant. The subcommittee’s first meeting is Tuesday, July 8.

The Avon Student Athletic Park Steering Committee was set up by residents to help raise money for the completion of the project. Residents who live near the Thompson Road site have expressed a desire for the playing field to be built in a different location.
