Avon Public Schools to Close Wednesday for Eighth Day

School administrators continue to review the condition of the roads to decide when schools will reopen.

Power has been restored to all Avon Public Schools, but schools will be closed again Wednesday because of the condition of the roads.

"I can't do it because it's just not safe," Avon Superintedent of Schools Gary Mala said Tuesday afternoon. "The buses can't travel on many of the roads.... We are at the mercy of our utility providers."

In addition to continued communication with town officials, the Department of Public Works, bus company DATTCO and Connecticut Light & Power, Mala said that the school district has also been talking to representatives from Comcast and AT&T. DATTCO, town and school officials, Comcast and AT&T are requesting immediate action on the trouble spots in town for the safety of residents and employees.

Mala said that CL&P has given assurance that they will work on those roads through Wednesday.

In the meantime, Avon High School will continue to be used as an emergency shelter at least through Wednesday, Town Manager Brandon Robertson said. The town has not yet chosen an alternate shelter location for the event that there are still power outages when schools reopen.
