Avon Senator Witkos Launches "Tell the Truth" Campaign

Says initiative aims to give residents a "fuller understanding of current news."

On Monday, state Sen. Kevin Witkos launched a “Tell the Truth” campaign, which he says will counter "misleading and distorted claims" from the governor's office and other sources.

“Time after time, I have come across news articles, television reports and other sources of information that simply do not tell the whole truth,” Witkos said in a statement. “In response, I decided to launch the ‘Tell the Truth’ initiative to provide Connecticut residents with a fuller understanding of current news coverage. In the coming weeks and months, I will be updating this resource on my website and speaking with members of the public to set the record straight.”

Andrew R. Doba, director of communications for Gov. Dannel P. Malloy said the press release is wrong in its reference to 1.3 billion budget deficit figure.  The two-year budget passed is a balanced one, Doba said.

“If senator Witkos is so concerned about the truth he should start putting it in his own press releases,” Doba said.

Witkos, on the other hand, contends Malloy is not being truthful on the budget's future impact in the state.

Doba disagrees.

"The governor has been honest with Connecticut residents from the beginning," he said. "He's never tried to sugarcoat the circumstances the state faces."

Democrats have also taken issue with Witkos, contending that it was a double standard to put out a press release on Main Street funding in Collinsville when he voted against the October jobs bill that funded it.

"If it was a subject matter that needed to be disclosed I would most definitely disclose it,” Witkos told CT News Junkie. “Some of the things I personally don’t vote for here in the state of Connecticut are projects that pass.”
