Budget Proposal Would Require 2.6 Percent Tax Increase

The Avon Town Council recommended a budget to the Board of Finance at a meeting on Thursday night.

The Avon Town Council gave a nod to a $28.93 million gross town budget proposal on Thursday night that would yield a 3.85 increase over last year's adopted budget when combined with the $52.8 million school board request.

If approved, the combined $81.76 million budget would mean increasing the mill rate, or tax rate, by 2.6 percent, according to Town Council Chairman Mark Zacchio. That is due to reductions in the capital improvement budget as a result of the February budget workshop and the addition of anticipated revenue, according to materials Town Manager Brandon Robertson submitted to the council for the meeting.

The town operating budget requested represents a 3.93 percent increase. The combined town side of the proposal – including the operating, capital improvement, debt services and sewers budgets – requires a 3.05 percent increase.

Robertson noted in the agenda packet that the budget request doesn't include funding for new police cruisers or a hydraulic lift and two cranes for the Department of Public Works, so it is likely "non-tax revenue sources" could fund these needed items.

The council's formal recommendation will now pass to the Board of Finance for review.
