While I'm generally in favor of these types of things, "animal abuse" is a gray area and very subjective. For example, virtually all hunters, trappers, anglers and farmers routinely do things that would be considered animal abuse, if animal rights advocates cared about all animals as much as they do their chosen favorites. It really opens up a bunch of moral questions. If it is not OK to kill a domestic dog, why is it OK to kill a domestic pig, when the pig is arguably smarter than the dog, just as emotional, just as aware of its surroundings, and can also be great pets?

Now you are bringing up the whole issue of agribusiness which is the wide scale abuse of animals. This issue is being addressed at the national level by several humane organizations. Here in CT we need to work on fighting abuse by legislation like the proposed bills.
