Could Country Club Road Sidewalks Be In Avon's Future?

The town of Avon is applying for grant money that could help fund potential future road paving and sidewalk projects on Country Club Road.

Town officials are considering repaving Country Club Road from West Avon Road to Lovely Street and putting in sidewalks on the road from Lovely to Old Wheeler Lane and beyond that to Brookmoor Road, Town Council Chairman Mark Zacchio said.

Country Club Road is a "main artery" of the town, so "it's natural to connect pedestrian traffic from Lovely Street to Old Wheeler Lane," Zacchio said. Roaring Brook School is on Old Wheeler, so he said sidewalks would also create pedestrian access to the school.

Neither project is finalized and both would require Planning and Zoning Commission approval, he said.

About 29 municipalities in Connecticut are eligible to apply for a cut of about $2 million in grant money for road projects and/or $2 million for sidewalk grant funds, Zacchio said, so it's no telling how much money Avon could receive for either project if selected.

State contractors will separately be installing a four-way traffic light at the intersection of Lovely Street and Country Club Road. Officials expect the project to be competed this summer.

"The light there has been something we've been asking for, for years," Zacchio said.

With a signalized crosswalk as a part of the light project, town officials are keeping that in mind while discussing the possibility of sidewalks in that area.
