Avon to Consider Options on Medical Marijuana Facility Regulations

The Town Planning and Zoning Commission held a public hearing for the amendment at its Monday night meeting.

Many Connecticut towns like Farmington and West Hartford have recently passed medical marijuana moratoriums and on Tuesday the Avon Planning and Zoning Commission will discuss its options on the subject.

The meeting starts at 7:30 p.m. in the Selectmen's Chambers at Avon Town Hall, building 1.

A town over in Farmington, the Town Planning and Zoning Commission adopted a six-month moratorium Monday barring medical marijuana dispensaries and production plants from opening in town. That buys town staff adequate time to research the new laws and consider options for municipal regulations.

West Hartford's Town Council recently adopted a nine-month moratorium

Medical marijuana productions and dispensaries cannot open in a town for the duration of a moratorium.

The state Department of Consumer Protection released medical marijuana regulations in September, setting a two-month deadline for applications for production and dispensary facilities, according to the town.

While the Farmington commission has not received any formal applications, Town Planner Robert Phillips said that he has gotten one inquiry on opening a medical marijuana facility to Farmington.

Should Avon adopt a moratorium on medical marijuana? Why or why not? Tell us in the comments!
