Five Things to Know about the Budget Referendum

Five things to know May 11, 2011.

The budget referendum may have started by the time you get your morning Patch newsletter. It goes from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Avon Senior Center.

The budget question is: Shall the annual town budget in the amount of $74,584,980, as recommended by the Board of Finance, for the fiscal year commencing on July 1, 2011 be approved?

If you're a resident who is registered to vote, you're all set, but no registration will be available at the referendum. However, if you're not registered, you can still vote, as long as you are 18 or older, a United States Citizen and own at least $1,000-worth of property as of Oct. 1, 2010.

The absentee ballots will be counted by noon, but the final vote tally will not be announced until after the voting booths close and the machine votes are electronically counted. The moderator, Mary Harrop, will announce the results.

The Board of Finance has a special meeting at 8 p.m. If the budget passes, they will set the tax rate for fiscal year 2011-12. If the budget does not pass, the board will schedule a tri-board meeting and a public hearing for a budget proposal to present at a second budget referendum.
