Linda McMahon Says She Was 'Stunned' by Her Loss

The former head of the WWE gave a post-election interview to Bloomberg News recently and said she was working on her acceptance speech when she learned she'd lost her bid — once again — for a U.S. Senate seat.

Linda McMahon was sitting alone, going over her acceptance speech, when she learned she'd lost, for the second time in as many years, her expensive and hard-fought battle to join the U.S. Senate.

In an interview with Bloomberg News a few days ago, McMahon said she was sitting in an upstairs room of her home, fine-tuning her acceptance speech about 40 minutes after the polls had closed, when she caught sight of a TV graphic showing that Democrat Chris Murphy had won.

"I was stunned for a moment," McMahon told Bloomberg News. "I sat there for a few minutes on my own, reflecting on what the race had been. I thought about the thousands of people who not only had touched me but whom I had touched as well. All the notes, 'Thank you for running. Thank you for showing me that it’s worth putting everything on the line,' and things like that."

She said that while some have criticized her for spending so much of her personal fortune on her Senate aspirations, $97 million as of the latest accounting, comments that she was trying to buy a U.S. Senate seat were off the mark, McMahon told the news service.

"The way it’s framed is that I’m trying to buy the election for my own personal gain. What would be my personal gain? I’m not looking for a new career. I’ve had a wonderful career. I was hoping to bring a different voice and perspective and use my skills that have been honed as a CEO in bringing people together," Bloomberg quotes her.

She would have been better off running as an independent. The GOP brand does not sell well in Connecticut, simple as that. I know she was different from the national party on many of the more divisive issues, but its hard to get past the "R" next to your name in CT.

Wyatt - I completely agree. In addition, her stances were more Independent than Republican on social issues such as abortion (she's pro choice). Also, her last ditch ads which featured supposed voters stating that they were voting for Linda and for Obama really pushed her as Independent. However, those ads appeared to be insincere to me, as they seemed to be a last ditch effort by Linda to shift from Republican to Independent simply to win the votes that she saw slipping away. She should have decided much earlier on to run as an Independent.

This made me laugh. Maybe she can have someone clean up all her signs that are now littering my town.

she certainly could not do any worse than Christ Murphy has to me, my family and this state. highest electric prices, highest oil prices, highest gas prices, highest food prices, and on and on. Ct has this clown Murphy and obama and we will all suffer for it like people have never seen.
Wyatt November 13, 2012 at 06:42 PM
@teresa. Wow. Chris Murphy did all of that to you? I had no idea he was so powerful. For a single representative to do any of that is quite impressive.
Michael Mercier November 14, 2012 at 04:00 AM
Wyatt, it was Murphy and the rest of his slimy ilk that is doing this to us. But the ignorant socialists pigs put him into power. Just remember Wyatt, while these demoncrats and their friends keep getting elected in dumb states like CT. The rich will get poorer. But the poor will also get poorer. The more power we give demoncrats, the more the economy will tank and people will go hungry. But you and your blindness refuse to see what is comming. You better pray that I am the foolish one predicting nonsense. But history is on my side. Whenever demoncrats get as much power as they are getting now with control of New England, the White House and the Senate, very bad things occur. WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Afganistan (Dont give the BS about Bush's fault. Obummer has been president for 4 years and th e war in Afganistan has turned into a blooming failure) I fear what is next for us and our families. Too bad 1 million more Americans did not see it comming. But go ahead, make your stupid remarks at Teresa. But she is right. Murphy certainly shares the blame for our suffering and for much more that is comming. God, I hope I am the foolish one not you Wyatt.

Yeah, welcome to CT......land of the (Governor's) spree and home of the (Business) nave. Success is punished here; and is about to be punished nationwide. What a joke. It would be funny if it weren't tragic/pathetic.

Her signs were obnoxious and with each day they bothered me more and more. I kept thinking of how many poor people could have been rescued from poverty - how many college educations could have provided. To spend millions to buy a seat is not what we want from our candidates. I'm glad she lost. It was all ego.

"...ignorant socialists pigs put him into power." Oh come on Michael really? It reads like something out of a 1967 revolutionary's handbook. ALWAYS amazed how some people find comfort in not only being over the top, but extravagantly so. "The more power we give demoncrats, the more the economy will tank and people will go hungry." The thing is (besides the absurdity of your comment) that it's always been the democrats who put safety nets into place so people wouldn't go hungry, whereas (and much more so recently) the republicans seem to subscribe to a 'survival of the fittest' mentality: you know, the pull-your-self-up-by-your-bootstraps meme. Of course, I can rest assured that YOU would never avail yourself of any of the "socialists pigs" social programs. You know, like social(ists) security, medicaid/medicare, earned income tax credits, mortgage deductions, unemployment and let's not forget that your 40 hour work week and time and half over 40 is a direct result of "socialists pigs" unions. Michael, even though most of your assumptions about who started what war are wrong, It's curious that you (intentionally) left out iraq? And also curious that you blame Obama for afghanistan, in your mind it's NOT bush's fault that he started that war but rather, Obama's because he didn't finish it? Really? Cognitive Dissonance much?

The goverment already spends over 60k for every person living in poverty and they are still living in poverty, that's the real problem
VC November 14, 2012 at 03:21 PM
Give me a break Obama spent a heck of a lot more than Romney did, so what's your point?
Ken November 15, 2012 at 04:49 AM
noah goode - Socialists like you make me want to puke... Some day when your kids are paying 75% of their income in taxes, or better still, when they can't find a job, I hope they walk up to you, smack you upside the head and say, "What the hell were you thinking????"

It sure is easy to pick out the Fox News watchers on a message board. You Obama & democrat haters love that kool aid & can't resist passing on Roger Ailes "daily talking points for rt wing dummies". I especially love that one that says "dumb states like CT"...is that opposed to the genius states of Alabama, Louisiana & Arkansas that voted overwhelming Romney & GOP? Get real. Linda tried to buy power to execute rt wing ideas and should have run as a tea partier. she fits right in. Since there is a good number of intelligent people in our state she lost.
