Remembering 9/11 and Town Meeting Tonight

Five things to know on May 2, 2011.

President Barack Obama announced late Sunday night that Osama bin Laden, the man responsible for organizing the terrorist attacks on 9/11, is dead. A full story is on The Huffington Post website.

9/11 also directly affected the Avon community when one of its natives, Amy Toyen died on one of the top floors in one of the World Trade Center towers. While working at Thomson Reuters in Boston when she was 24, she attended a business conference in a restaurant in one of the Twin Towers that day. Local responses to the death of bin Laden and memories of Toyen are posted on Avon Patch and will be updated throughout the day.

Do you remember where you were on 9/11 and did you know someone who either died or was present at Ground Zero? What do you think about the news about bin Laden's death? Either comment the site or e-mail Jessie.Sawyer@patch.com.

In another news, the annual town meeting is Monday night at 7 p.m. at the Avon Senior Center. This is not a public hearing, but is an informational presentation on the proposed 2011-12 budget that will be on the ballot at the referendum on May 11 at the senior center, starting at 8 a.m.

For background on the history of town meetings and Avon's process for voting on the budget, see a full story on Avon Patch.
